What is an e-bike?
An e-bike, or electric bicycle, is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor used to assist propulsion. The motor assistance is typically controlled by pedaling (pedal-assist) or by a throttle, dramatically enhancing your riding experience by making hills easier and commutes faster.
How fast do Pelagic Cycles e-bikes go?
Our e-bikes typically adhere to Class 1, 2, or 3 regulations. Class 1 and 2 e-bikes assist up to 20 mph, while Class 3 models can assist up to 28 mph. The actual top speed depends on local regulations, motor power, and rider input.
Are e-bikes legal on bike paths?
The legality of e-bikes on bike paths varies by state and local jurisdiction. In most areas, Class 1 and 2 e-bikes (pedal-assist only, or throttle limited to 20 mph) are treated like traditional bicycles and are permitted on bike paths. Class 3 e-bikes may have more restrictions. Always check your local laws.
How far can I go on a single charge?
The range of a Pelagic Cycles e-bike varies significantly based on factors such as battery size, terrain, rider weight, assist level used, and weather conditions. Generally, you can expect anywhere from 30 to 60 miles on a full charge with pedal-assist. Some models with larger batteries can achieve over 80 miles.
How long does it take to charge the battery?
Charging times typically range from 4 to 6 hours for a full charge from empty. Our fast chargers can reduce this time considerably. Always use the charger provided with your Pelagic Cycles e-bike.
How long do e-bike batteries last?
With proper care, a typical e-bike battery can last for 3 to 5 years, or about 500-1000 full charge cycles, before its capacity significantly degrades. Store your battery at room temperature and avoid extreme hot or cold conditions to maximize its lifespan.
What maintenance is required for a Pelagic Cycles e-bike?
E-bikes require similar maintenance to traditional bicycles but with added attention to the electrical components. Regularly check tire pressure, brake pads, chain lubrication, and bolt tightness. Keep the battery contacts clean and inspect wiring for any damage. We recommend a professional tune-up annually.
Can I service my e-bike myself?
Basic maintenance like tire changes, chain lubrication, and brake adjustments can be done at home. However, any work involving the motor, controller, or battery should ideally be handled by certified e-bike technicians. Tampering with electrical components can void your warranty.
